Engagement Rings

Engagement Ring Repair

An engagement ring is worn every day, and the parts that hold the diamond take the most wear. Small problems, such as a bent or thinning prong, are inexpensive to fix early. Left alone, the same problem can lead to a lost center stone. These are the engagement ring repairs we handle most often:

  • Prong re-tipping and rebuilding: adding new metal to worn prong tips so they grip the diamond securely again.
  • Loose stone tightening: resetting a center stone or side stones that move, click or catch on clothing.
  • Missing stone replacement: matching and setting a replacement diamond or gemstone.
  • Head and setting replacement: replacing a worn four- or six-prong head when re-tipping is no longer enough.
  • Resizing with stones in place: sizing a ring up or down while protecting the diamonds in the band.
  • Sizing beads: adding small metal beads inside the band so a ring stays upright and fits snugly without a full resize.
  • Remounting: moving your original diamond into a new or updated setting. See our custom ring design service.

Wedding Bands

Wedding Ring and Band Repair

Wedding bands usually need attention after years of daily wear, after a change in finger size, or after an accident at work or home. Common wedding ring repairs include:

Fit and structure

  • Ring sizing: making a band larger or smaller in gold, platinum or sterling silver.
  • Shank repair and replacement: rebuilding a band that has worn thin or cracked at the bottom.
  • Soldering a wedding set: joining an engagement ring and wedding band so they stop spinning and rubbing against each other.
  • Reshaping: rounding out a band that has been bent or flattened.

Remakes and finish

  • Remaking a worn ring: recreating a wedding ring that is too damaged to repair.
  • Anniversary upgrades: adding a larger center stone or redesigning a wedding set.
  • Polishing and refinishing: removing scratches and restoring the original shine or a matte finish.
  • Rhodium plating: restoring the bright white color of white gold.

Want to add names, a date or a message inside your band once it is repaired? Our engraving service is handled in the same store.

Why Kuhn’s

45 Years of Repair Experience, With Modern Tools

A jeweler store with experience

Kuhn’s Diamond Jewelers has been repairing jewelry for more than 45 years. You can expect a clear explanation of what your piece needs, and someone who knows exactly how the work was done if you ever have a question later.

Laser welding for delicate work

Our shop uses a jewelry laser welder in addition to a traditional torch. A laser welder joins metal with a very small, concentrated point of heat. That matters because many gemstones, such as emeralds, opals and some treated stones, can be damaged by the broad heat of a torch. With a laser welder, a prong, seam or link can often be repaired right next to a stone without removing the stone first. It also allows cleaner joins on fine chains and thin, older pieces. Randy will tell you during the estimate which method is right for your piece.

Pricing

What Jewelry Repair Costs

The price depends on the piece and the work it needs, so we give every customer a free estimate instead of a one-size-fits-all price. These factors have the biggest effect on cost:

Factor Why it affects the price
Metal type Platinum and high-karat gold cost more to add and take more labor to work than sterling silver or lower-karat gold.
Size change Sizing up requires adding metal. Larger changes need more metal and more work.
Stones in the band Channel-set, pavé and eternity bands need extra care so the stones stay secure after sizing.
Number of prongs or stones Re-tipping is priced per prong, and each replacement stone adds cost.
Condition A thin or cracked shank may need rebuilding before other work can be done.

Check Your Rings

Signs Your Ring Needs a Repair

Check your rings every few months, or bring them in and we will look at them for you. Have a ring looked at if you notice any of these signs:

  • The diamond moves, rattles or makes a clicking sound when tapped.
  • The ring snags on sweaters, hair or bedding.
  • A prong looks flat, bent or shorter than the others.
  • The band looks thinner at the bottom or has a visible crack.
  • The ring spins on your finger or no longer slides over your knuckle.
  • White gold is turning yellow in spots.

FAQ

Jewelry Repair FAQs

Can every ring be resized?

No. Most gold, platinum and sterling silver rings can be resized. Rings made of tungsten, titanium or ceramic generally cannot. Eternity bands with stones all the way around are difficult to size. If your ring cannot be resized, we will explain the options, such as sizing beads or a new band.

Do you repair jewelry that was not bought at Kuhn’s?

Yes. We repair jewelry from any store, as well as inherited pieces.

Who repairs my jewelry?

Repairs are handled by Kuhn’s Diamond Jewelers, who has been repairing jewelry for more than 45 years.

How long does ring sizing take?

Most ring sizing is done within a few days. Rings with stones in the band, or rings that need extra metal added, can take longer. Your estimate includes a pickup date.

Do I need an appointment?

No appointment is needed for a free repair estimate. Stop in Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., or Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Should I get an appraisal after a repair?

If you replaced a stone, rebuilt a setting or changed a ring’s design, an updated appraisal helps keep your insurance coverage accurate. Learn about jewelry appraisals at Kuhn’s.

What can I do with broken jewelry I no longer want?

You can redesign it into a new piece through our custom design service, or sell the gold to us. See We Buy Gold.
